The British Open 2023 Roundup

It's nearly that time. The oldest golf competition in the world is once again hovering on the horizon. Last year, Cameron Smith hoisted that iconic Claret Jug after four mesmerizing rounds at St Andrew's, but Cameron Young and Rory Mcllalroy chased him hard all the way. Who will claim success this year when the play gets underway on July 20th?

Where Is the British Open Being Played in 2023?

The 151st edition of the British Open is set to take place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Merseyside. It will be the 13th time the course has hosted the Open, with the previous occasion coming in 2014, a memorable competition won by local favorite Rory McIlroy.

British Open 2023 Schedule

Here's a brief day-to-day guide to what's happening at the British Open 2023:

July 16th-19th

The British Open begins with four days of practice rounds during which the players can get a feel of the course and iron out any issues with their game before the main event starts. Gates will open to the public at 9:00 am on Sunday, July 16th, and at 9:00 am the following three days.

Tickets are available for these practice rounds and provide a great - and much quieter - chance to see your heroes up close. If you can make it, we highly recommend this opportunity!

July 20th - Round 1

The 151st edition of this storied competition tees off early in the morning on July 20th. The exact times have yet to be released, but Round 1 last year at St Andrew's began at 6:35 am, with playing continuing until around 8:30 pm. Expect a few nerves in round 1. As they say, you can't win the open on the first day, but you can certainly lose it.

July 21st - Round 2

With Day 1 out of the way, Round 2 starts bright and early on July 21st - at 6:35 am if we are to go on last year's schedule. The end of Round 2 may only signify the halfway point, but with the dreaded cut looming, it’s a day fraught with nerves.

July 22nd - Round 3

After the field is cut, Round 3 begins on the 22nd of July at a slightly later time of 8:00 am. This is where we typically see gaps between the contenders and the chasing pack as we go into the final day.

July 23rd - Round 4

There's nothing quite like the final round at the British Open. On a warm Sunday, Round 4 starts around 8:00 am, and you can bet the nerves will be jangling at this point as the reality of winning inches ever closer for those near the top of the leaderboard. By 7:00 pm, we should know the winner of the 2023 Open.

How Does Qualifying Work for the 2023 British Open?

There will be a total of 156 players jockeying for position when the British Open gets underway. Some will have qualified automatically through their rankings, previous Open wins, or designated tournament wins, while others will have done it the hard way through qualifying.

The Open Qualifying Series (OQS) includes 11 events, starting with the Johannesburg Open in November 2022 and concluding with the Genesis Scottish Open, which finishes just four days before the Open begins. Each tournament offers two to four spots for the highest finishers, giving them automatic qualification for the Open.

What’s the Purse for the 2023 British Open?

The total purse for the 2023 British Open stands at £14,000,000. In the days of the LIV and some of the enormous purses on offer in the U.S., the British Open has fallen back in terms of prize value. Indeed, the Players Championship has a purse of $25,000,000. But make no mistake about it, every player out there dreams of winning this historic tournament that started it all.

Final Thoughts

There's nothing like going to see the pros play to act as inspiration for your own golf game. Seeing the very best in the world of golf is a sight to behold and certainly makes you want to drag out that set of clubs when you get home and book the next available tee time with friends and loved ones.
