2023 Masters Tournament Summary

The 2023 Masters Tournament wrapped up Sunday, April 9th, and was full of surprises and excitement for golf fans! Jon Rahm emerged victorious, and Spain boasts yet another Masters champion. This came about after a significant turning of the tables in the tournament's final round. 

On Sunday, Brooks Koepka started the day in the lead at 13 under, while Jon Rahm was four behind him. By the time the tournament finished, Koepka was tied for second with Phil Mickelson and four strokes behind Jon Rahm, who was officially the champion!

Where Was the Masters in 2023?

The 2023 Masters Tournament was the 87th Masters Tournament and was the first of the four major men's golf championships that will be held this year. It took place from Thursday, April 6th to Sunday, April 9th, at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. 

The Augusta National Golf Club has hosted the annual Masters Tournament since 1934 - it’s the only major hosted at the same course every year. In 2009, Golf Digest ranked it in a list of America's 100 greatest courses!

  • Thursday, April 6th - Round 1
  • Friday, April 7th - Round 2
  • Saturday, April 8th - Round 3
  • Sunday, April 9th - Round 4

However, the weather can sometimes have different ideas in mind. On Saturday, 45 minutes of rain resulted in play being suspended. On Sunday, conditions were dry and sunny following two days of bad weather. The third round was completed Sunday morning, and the final round began in the afternoon. 

Who Qualified for the 2023 Masters? 

A total of 104 players were invited to participate in the Masters Tournament, including all past champions still living, and including 18 LIV golfers. Invitations were sent based on certain eligibility criteria. According to the Masters website, the invitees were as follows:

Who Won the 2023 Masters Tournament? 

Ultimately, Jon Rahm came out victorious ahead of Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson to take home the green jacket! At the start of the final round, he was two strokes behind Koepka. However, he shot a 3-under 69 and finished 12-under by the end! 

This makes his second major tournament victory and his first Masters win! His first major tournament win was the 2021 U.S. Open. He and Seve Ballesteros are the only Spanish players to be the winners of two different majors.

Tiger Woods, who has won the Masters Tournament five times, withdrew from the tournament on Sunday. He did so due to injury, his first time withdrawing in the 25 times he has participated in the Masters Tournament.
