What is a Full Set of Golf Clubs? What Every Golfer Needs!

You may want to ensure you have everything you need to play a full 18 holes when you're starting as an amateur golfer. You know that picking up a set of clubs to call your own is the first step to success.

But what is in a complete set of golf clubs?

A full golf set usually consists of around twelve. This set will include a combination of various types of clubs suited for different aspects of the game. But do you need all those clubs?

The answer, for the most part, is yes! Golf is a game that requires skill, technique, and equipment. To ensure you are ready for any course, you will want to own and understand all your clubs and the purpose each fulfills.

Read on to find out everything that makes up your full set of golf clubs.

Woods & Driver

The woods and driver are your best bet to take your ball off the tee and make some fair distance on your first drive. They are the ones you use to hit the ball the furthest but come with the risk of losing precision with your shot.

A driver is the longest club in the bag and can hit the ball the furthest. This club was once actually considered a wood, a “one wood,” to be precise. Now, golfers refer to it as a driver, which forever marks it a specialty club.

The term “woods” is an archaic title that goes back to when club makers actually used wood to make clubs. Nowadays, the name persists, though the material used may include wood or various types of metal.

Woods are long clubs numbered by the angle of the golf club's face, known as the ‘loft.’ A golf set will usually have around three wood clubs depending on preference. Some golfers prefer to use a 3-wood as their driver or for long shots on the fairway.

Irons

Named for their iron clubheads, these clubs provide a more versatile option. Irons tend to be steadier clubs due to their shorter shafts. They give the golfer distance without sacrificing accuracy.

A traditional set includes up to six irons. The most common choices include the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. These numbers are also related to the loft of the club.

Irons represent the most clubs in any set, and golf champions like Mark Broadie state that mid and short irons are the most important clubs you can own.

Hybrids

Many players opt to swap out some of their set for hybrid clubs, combining the best parts of woods and irons. These clubs provide distance and accuracy while keeping the shaft as short as possible.

Players who want to swap out some of their set for hybrids will sub out the 3 and 4 irons. These irons are replaceable due to having trouble achieving height and consistency for their strike. Some companies even offer complete hybrid sets.

Putters

Every golfer must have a putter in their set if they don't want to run into trouble on the green to take that last shot into the hole. These clubs are specialty clubs designed to get the ball those last few yards.

Choosing a perfect putter takes time, as it is essential that the putter feels properly weighted and delivers consistent results. This club reportedly makes up around 41% of shots during a golf round, so you'll want to choose yours wisely. Understanding which is the perfect fit is largely up to taste, and there are many different varieties available on the market.

Wedges

These clubs could be considered specialty irons, but every good set should include at least three. When stuck in a bunker or tantalizingly close to the green, the blade-like design of these clubs will help to increase shot control and shaping.

The three wedges most golfers include are a pitching wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge, but some golfers encourage even more options.
